TYPES OF SHINGLES

When it comes to your home’s roofing you may think all shingles are alike however you do have a choice. You will find out that there are two types of asphalt shingles to choose from. Read on to find out more about 3-tab and architectural shingles to determine which is right for your home.

3- TAB SHINGLES

As an industry standard for many years, the 3-tab shingle is the most commonly used type of roofing. They are called 3-tab shingles because there are cutouts along the bottom edge of a larger shingle to make it appear as if it were three different shingles but is really one solid piece. 3-tab shingles are very flat and thin and they come in a variety of color options. They are durable and if you take care of them properly they can last longer. 3-tab shingles are lighter in weight than architectural shingles which allows the possibility of adding another layer rather than replacing the shingles. 3-tab shingles are an economical and popular choice of roofing material.

ARCHITECTURAL SHINGLES

Dimensional shingles or architectural shingles are made of a much thicker material and come at a higher price than 3 -tab shingles. They can be up to three times thicker than traditional asphalt shingles. This additional thickness allows the shingle to come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Dimensional shingles are also made in a variety of colors. There are no cutouts in architectural shingles. They have additional asphalt covering which allows for a more curved appearance. If you are looking for a more visually interesting roof then an architectural shingle will provide that appearance. If your roof is sloped and there is a higher chance of wind-driven rain then architectural shingles may not be recommended. The curve could allow water to get in causing leaking issues.

WHICH IS BEST FOR YOUR HOME?

When determining which type of shingle to choose you can’t go wrong with a 3-tab option. It is the most budget-friendly, economical, and commonly used roofing material. However, if you want an interesting visual appearance to your roof and have a higher budget then architectural shingles are a great choice.
